For those of you grim dark future inclined, you will likely be aware that the new version of Warhammer 40k Apocalypse is around the corner and to help players bulk out their armies, GW have announced detachment sets for *most* of the armies available in 40k, and some new vehicles, albeit that prices have not officially been confirmed at time of writing.

Looking specifically at the detachments, there have been strong rumours/leaks that the USD pricing will be $170, and the UK pricing will be £100, a box. This is the standard pricing for battle sets around Christmas and New Year so there seems to be some weight behind this, and let’s hope it is true as this will mean some hefty savings for people buying the sets, although some more than others.

Adding up the cost of the sets when bought separately, based on GW’s UK site, we get the below:

ArmyDetachment £SAVINGS!Bought Sep.
Tau £ 100.00 £ 70.00 £ 170.00
Space Marines £ 100.00 £ 67.50 £ 167.50
Chaos Marines £ 100.00 £ 62.00 £ 162.00
Tyranids £ 100.00 £ 59.00 £ 159.00
Craftworld £ 100.00 £ 57.00 £ 157.00
Necrons £ 100.00 £ 56.00 £ 156.00
Imperial Guard £ 100.00 £ 55.00 £ 155.00
Orks £ 100.00 £ 53.50 £ 153.50
Ad Mech £ 100.00 £ 48.00 £ 148.00
Knights £ 100.00 £ 45.00 £ 145.00

As you can see from the above, Tau players will get the best saving, at a huge £70, whilst Space Marines and Chaos Space Marines are not far behind at £67.50 and £62 in savings respectively. On the flip side, Ad Mech and Knights players ‘only’ get to save £48 and £45 respectively, but to put that in perspective Knights players are paying for a Castellan and getting the pair of Armiger Helverins for free.

Also, in case you were wondering, if you dropped a grand and bought all 10 sets, you would have a saving of £573 compared to buying everything separately, something which I should point out is not currently possible due to a number of the units/individual models being out of stock currently.

As an old timer Ultramarine player trying to bulk up on Primaris troop choices, I am incredibly tempted by the Space Marine detachment, but I am not sure I need as many as 30 Intercessors, and really am not bothered by the Captain and Redemptor Dreadnought models. I actually think buying the Dark Imperium starter set and making use of the variety of models included, but we will see. I have a bit of time to consider before committing to anything at this stage!

How about you, have you got your eye on any of the detachment boxes? And which do you think is the best one?

Until next time, peace out.
