About a month ago, in one of the Whatsapp groups me and my friends have, an idea was put forward about doing a bike ride later in the summer. I haven’t owned my own bike since I was about 17 but, as a kid, I was a big fan of cycling and would cycle everywhere, even on my own if I had nothing to do that evening. A few weeks later and I have picked out my bike and me and my friends are¬†organising my first bike ride for about 10 years.

So, early start on Saturday morning, with some slight unexpected delays, and we were off on our route. Luton to London. Approximately 50 miles and it took us about 6 hours, which I think is pretty good. We stopped 4 times, including one which was slightly longer to have our lunch, and were making very good time for the first half of the route. Then the muscle fatigue began to kick in (for me more so than Tom). Our pace also slowed once we made it into London as we cycled along the canals and had to be concious of the slow pedestrians that like to somehow not hear a pair of bells ringing behind them.

My bike performed well, I think. Some difficulties with moving between second and third gear on my front set is something I will keep an eye on but otherwise the only real things that held me back were me. By the time we stopped for lunch, and despite the newly bought cycle shorts from Sports Direct, it would hurt when I sat down and I could feel it in the front of my thighs. I also noticed that I was leaning on my handlebars a lot and this has hurt the palms of my hands.

So, the long and short of it: I am capable of doing 50 miles in a day but it hurts like hell currently and I have quite a lot of work to do before I am capable of doing 50 miles a day for 5 days in a row. So, I will keep you updated and I hope this will be something we discuss regularly.
