2013: A Year in Photographs

Over Christmas, we spent some time at Abi’s mum’s house and we were discussing photography and we were talking about how digital photography is definitely a good thing but it has lead to most people not printing out their photographs and photo albums have virtually disappeared.

Because i’ve been taking my photography pretty seriously over the last year, I thought it would be a nice thing to get a bunch printed in really good quality and after doing some looking around I decided to get them printed in a photobook. I took my time and tried out a few different pieces of software, because I wanted to make it look pretty professional, and in the end I decided to go with the option built in to iPhoto as I have a MacBook.

The layout options are really good and you have lots of control over how you can set the pages out, something which a lot of the other software didn’t have. The price was reasonable, I felt, considering I was only going to get one copy printed and the delivery should have been really quick except for UPS not being very consistent with their deliveries. Once I had the finished product in my hand, I must say I was very impressed with the quality of the paper used and the people in my office were all impressed with the quality of the book (as well as the quality of the photography if I may blow my own trumpet!).

The only problem I came across was a few typo errors in the text. The text system is definitely not the strongest part of the software and the fact it didn’t flag up spelling mistakes is a bit of a downer. Fortunately the text in the book is not the main part and overall it doesn’t really detract from the main intent of it.

One of my friends suggested having an ebook version, something which I am considering, but I’m unsure if I can get it to have the same effect as actually having the book in your hand. I’ll have a play around and see what I can find for getting ebook’s made. I’ll keep you updated if I find anything that will do the job properly for me.
